The Testing of High Level Query Languages

Janet E. Hiller · Australian Software Engineering Conference · 1990

We frequently read statements about user friendliness; it is less frequent that we see accounts of the testing of software. This paper looks at options for testing. There is a section concerned with philosophical issues - what are we trying to achieve with testing? There is a review of types of measures and types of testing. The logging task and use of the logs for both 'playback' and analysis will be discussed. The paper will consider two types of language, viz a 4GL for a dbms, and a command language for a searching system. Illustrations will be given of the results of analysis of use of these two systems.
