Although in literature several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the role of calcium phosphate (CaP) scaffolds in mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-driven bone formation, experimental evidence indicates a key role for calcium ions (Ca2+) in osteoinduction. The current computational models of bone formation and regeneration in CaP scaffolds do not include the influence of the local Ca2+ concentration on cellular activities and bone formation. This study aims to develop a computational model of MSC-driven bone formation in CaP scaffolds with an emphasis on the role of Ca2+.
