Integrate JavaScript into the course: organization of programming languages

Xu‐Sheng Wang · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2015

Organization of Programming Languages is a course offered in many Computer Science programs today. This course discusses principles of programming languages, and explores different features in programming languages. To better understand the contents of the course, students are strongly recommended to learn a few programming languages in different categories before taking the course. The students in our program have learned C++ and Java languages. The important change I made in teaching the course is that I add JavaScript details into the course because JavaScript has some features different from C++ and Java, and is a popular scripting language widely used in web client-side programming. This change helps students understand the contents of Organization of Programming Languages more easily and deeply, and makes students become familiar with the web programming platform. This paper shares my experience of teaching this course and provides some useful information for other instructors teaching the same course in Computer Science programs.
