The Development of a New Sheep Shearing Handpiece

BW Field · 1984

The conventional sheep shearing handpiece suffers from several ergonomic problems, many of which can be overcome by making the power plant integral with the hand-grip. In order to use a small, inexpensive electric motor, it is necessary to reduce the power requirements of the machine. By analysing the mechanism of the conventional handpiece, the major reasons for its poor mechanical efficiency can be identified. Three separate inventions, which improve the efficiency, evolve from the analysis, and their combination creates the required power savings. A handpiece which was built to confirm the predicted performance has the additional benefits of long tool life and low operating temperature.
