Adding Intelligence to the Public Switched Telephone Network

During the last two decades a wide range of new telecommunication services has been introduced. This paper describes some of the factors influencing this trend, the role increasing computer capabilities have played in the delivery of new services, and the evolution of the network towards the Intelligent Network. The objectives of such a network are outlined and the key components identified. The paper also explores some of the future challenges technology and telecommunication administrations face.
