Implementing New Signalling Standards in a Distributed Environment

Maf Player · Australian Software Engineering Conference · 1989

Modern telecommunication switches have a lifetime of several decades and during that time it is often necessary to upgrade them with new hardware due to advances in technology and new software to implement more advanced functions. Any new software must interface with existing software without impacting unduly upon it. The software structuring concepts, formal design methods and documentation techniques, employed by Alcatel STC in introducing new signalling systems into a fully distributed digital exchange has helped maintain control of development in a complex system, ensured software quality and resulted in significant productivity gains.
