We are experiencing a rapid convergence of applications, data, access, and architecture between HPC and commercial computing. Both markets are moving towards an infrastructure based on clients, portals, and resource pools. This new market for hybrid technical/commercial servers reached US$8 billion in 1998 according to the Smaby group. New HPC business opportunities for service and portal providers are emerging, and the overall HPC market will be invigorated by these changes.
