Liberation forces fought ten long years to free Mozambique of 500 years of Portuguese domination. But as officials of the new government discovered during the transition period before independence June 25, the real struggle is just beginning. The problems we now face are overwhelming, far greater than we ever anticipated, one cabinet member confessed. We can't even get many of the statistics we need to formulate priorities and programs. I didn't think I could work harder or put in more hours than I did during the war, but I've learned differently. It's going to be a long haul.
