This paper proposes an adaptive algorithm that optimizes the packet size to maximize the communication performance through an automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol in ad hoc mobile communication networks. The optimal packet size is chosen by an adaptive algorithm based on the estimation of the channel from the number of retransmission requests and the link distance statistics obtained from the mobility pattern. The distribution of the link distance among mobile nodes was obtained from a Gauss-Markov mobility pattern in a mobile cellular communication area. This paper uses the distribution of the bit error rate (BER) based on the mobility pattern distribution of the link distance obtained from the mobility simulation. By adapting the distribution of the BER obtained from the mobility pattern, it is possible to estimate the channel conditions more accurately from the number of retransmission requests and to improve the throughput and utilization performance of ad hoc networking in mobile cellular communication domains.
