Microprocessors have entered the process control field and are there to stay. Being low cost, but very powerful digital computing devices, they form the ideal components of distributed architecture. With increased reliability, flexibility, availability and software capability, they are easing out conventional instrumentation. The paper describes the evolution of digital control, its superiority and adaptability in the field of process instrumentation.
