Improvisation?: Yes Anyone Can Improvise. There is a Definite Structure from the Beginning and it Follows a Logical Sequential Path

Dan Quigley · 2005

The workshop will work through the process of teaching and improvisation using the Jazzworx system. The system is different to any other in that we take music theory and harmony and apply it immediately to performance. On successful completion of our course you will be capable of analysing any chord sequence, know how to harmonize and be able to improvise over it. Your musicianship skills will be of the highest level in performance and theory knowledge. The Jazzworx! Improvisation System is based on Major Scales in the Circle of 4ths and how logically and systematically everything evolves from this. The system is designed so that anyone can improvise and also learn all about music theory/harmony and its practical application to performance. The harmonic structure of Western (European) music moves forward or upwards in sequences of 4ths. The system shows how the Circle of 4ths keeps evolving through the journey of music theory and harmony. This is done through the application of the Greek Ecclesiastical Modes as they are also used harmonically in a Circle of 4ths. The approach we take is to learn all 12 Major Scales and arpeggios. Next learn all Dominant 7th scales and arpeggios. These are then applied to the basic blues. We do not recommend the use of the Blues scale at this stage. The Blues scale is commonly taught as the one scale to be used over the one key (e.g., for blues in F, just use the F Blues scale). This does not teach anyone to play through the chord changes e.g. Blues in F has 3 keys - F7, Bb7 and C7. Our approach is to play through chord changes from the very beginning.
