The object of this paper is to propose a new access protocol applicable to asynchronous packet CDMA systems. In the proposed protocol, which is named Modified Channel Load Sensing Protocol (MCLSP), the hub station continuously senses the channel load for a certain period of time, and computes the probability with which each user station is to transmit its packet then broadcasts the computed value. This paper evaluates the throughput performance of the asynchronous packet CDMA with conventional CLSP as well as with MCLSP, and clarifies the effect of the access timing delay on the throughput performance. It is shown that the proposed protocol can achieve a significant improvement in the throughput performance even in the presence of a long access timing delay.
