Abstract. We discuss in this paper the usefulness and applicability of escape analysis in small and secured embedded systems used in ubiquitous computing. We propose a solution to support both hardware constraints and necessary support of dynamically-loaded components in such a context. Recent years have witnessed an increasing need for small computer applications in nearly every aspect of our daily life. This concerns devices with specific constraints, such as smart cards or PDAs that share common concerns, both in terms of flexibility and restricted hardware characteristics. There is a limited amount of available computation power, memory, or even energy, while there is a pressing need to perform efficiently more and more complex tasks. The design of such systems would obviously benefit from previous works that have been led in the area of object oriented languages and systems, which have been successful in related areas. Ubiquitous computing is closely related to the notion of mobile code and services, and Java is a leading programming language
