This dissertation describes a knowledge-based approach to building computer programs to solve process synthesis problems. The knowledge-based approach integrates AI methods such as: constraint-based reasoning, case-based reasoning, inductive learning, genetic algorithms, and qualitative reasoning. Using design examples from chemical and biotechnology domains, the knowledge-based approach has been illustrated. The methods are applicable for general engineering design problem-solving situations that require heuristic search.
