Glen L. Urban · DSpace@MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) · 2011
Professor Urbans discussion of the family planning problem is representative of the application of management science techniques to social problems. The author outlines a sequence of decisions for family planning and then describes a management informations system designed to support these decisions. A structure of decision for family planning is presented and discussed in detail in the following step-by-step fashion; (a) creative design of alternatives (b) program formulation and strategy determination (c) specification of tactics and (d) organization staffing and control. The conclusion reached is that if a decision-information system can be designed supported by good data and behavioral research and implemented the quality of management of family planning can increase. By improving the ways to achieve the four steps mentioned management science and informations systems can make a meaningful contribution to the reduction of birth rates in developing countries.
