From shelf arrangements to web searching: a journey through knowledge organization

Jennifer Rowley · Dialnet (Universidad de la Rioja) · 2003

Develops a perspective on the development of the Organization of Knowledge (OK) and Information Retrieval (IR) practice and research over the past thirty to forty years. Uses a number of exhibits to represent historical perspectives, including document contents and titles, and experience descriptions. Develops a framework of five eras of OK and IR, using the following dimensions: users, information resources, indexing and searching languages, and information systems and interfaces. The five eras are labeled as: print, expert online, early computer-based public access, end-user, and embedded access, respectively. The core themes of OK and IR that have persisted are summarized as selection, and evaluation, organization, and de-selection. Some continuing research agendas are identified in relation to each of these areas.
