We study the performance of the cross-relation (CR) method for estimating the impulse responses of multiple FIR channels driven by an unknown input sequence. Assuming a large data size or/and a high SNR, an explicit expression for the estimation variance of the CR method is derived. It is observed that the CR method can achieve the Cramer- Rao bound (CRB) when the channels are well conditioned, and can not achieve the CRB when the channels are not well conditioned. The performance of the CR method is also compared with that of a fast maximum likelihood method which always achieves the CRB at high SNR.
