A Pragmatical Study of Preposition Deletion

Shi-Hsung Huang · 復興崗學報 · 1998

Prepositions are the most commonly used words in any English text, appearing both in sentences and in utterances. It is nearly impossible to have good communication without prepositions. Nevertheless, within some contexts, prepositions can be deleted without harming the meaning at all. Often the deleted items are not first explicitly expressed before deletion, but are understood from the situational context, either occurring within the communication or established by the communication. In this article, the author will discuss the cause and effect of omitting prepositions, instead of the correct usage of prepositions. Therefore, the concern is what causes the preposition to be deleted and bow this occurs. Materials used for analysis are representatives of common usage English.
