Lossless Image Compression for Medical Record Archiving and Telemedicine

GA Naghdy, J Wang, Philip Ogunbona · 1995

Medical images are currently more extensively processed in digital form and the storage requirement for computer-based archival of high-resolution digital images is overwhelming. In teleradiology applications medical images are transmitted from a source point to a destination. The bandwidth required for transmission challenges currently deployed technology. Lossy compression schemes which are used extensively in non-medical applications achieve impressive compression gains by discarding non-crucial information. In the medical applications, however, all the information contained in an image could be of crucial importance and any attempt in compressing the data should ensure no loss of information. This significant constrain reduces the compression gain considerably. This paper compares the performance of a number of most widely used lossless compression schemes in medical image archiving and telemedicine.
