A particle-based mechanistic model for drape simulation

K. Y. Sze, X Liu, C. Wang · 2026

This paper presents a particle-based model for cloth drape simulation. Compared to its precursors, the present model employs the corotational framework. Using the framework and some commonly employed assumptions for large-displacement but small-strain problems, the tensile, trellising and bending energy of the fabric cloth are derived. By taking derivative of the total internal energy with respect to the displacement variables, a system of nonlinear equations can be obtained. It can be noted that these equations are considerably simpler than that of the conventional particle-based models. A few examples are examined and the predicted results conform well with our daily perception of fabric drapes.
