Corpus Collocation Extraction and English Synonym Discrimination

Collocation extraction system is designed to retrieve combinations of either habitually or grammatically related words from a corpus so as to systematically analyse and study the collocations of words.Where corpora with such system are not available,teachers have to resort to the traditional approach to synonym discrimination,the definition plus description one.With the realization of collocation extraction,quantitative measurements of collocational strength to highlight the salient collocations,Sketch Engine and some other corpus programs will provide us with unprecedented perspectives to examine the typical collocations of words.Their achievement represents a trend in the development of a new generation corpora.Corpora with collocation extraction are becoming practical tools in foreign language teaching and study.The problems encountered in traditional approaches of discriminating synonyms will be readily solved.
