On the Incorporation of Haptic Effects in Security Authentication

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the incorporation of four haptic features in a haptic-enabled authentication procedure, including stiffness, static friction, magnetic, and pop-through. Security authentication systems are important tools for protecting sensitive information and for restricting access to secure locations in society. Despite their crucial roles, these systems are extremely susceptible to simple observation attacks from cameras, or from shoulder surfing. Haptic technology offers a potential solution to this problem by giving us authentication systems that rely on touch signals rather than visual ones. We have conducted a user study on the incorporation of the haptic features with this application. Our results show that the haptic features can be used as potential variables in an authentication process.
