A top-down design method, which emphasizes the application of near-term optical waveguide circuit devices and concepts, forms the basis for a detailed of a real-time processor base don the residue number system (RNS). The conceptual design represents a real-time version of the least-mean-square (LMS) adaptive filter using 8-weights. Total internal reflection switches, selected as the elementary optical waveguide circuit device, are arranged first into N X N and then into sequentially linked serpentines. By tailoring the LMS algorithm to these serpentine configurations and introducing a new scaling algorithm, based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem, only three clock periods are required per filter iteration. For an envisioned 8 nsec. clock period, the processor computation rate should exceed 2.5 X 10 to the 9th power operations per second (2.5 G ops).
