When these di↵erent meanings are completely distinct from each other, we call them homographs, such as the word bank that can refer to the financial institution or the river side.It is often the case, however, that a word can denote more finer-grained sense distinctions that are interrelated or derived from each other.The noun wood, for example, has two related senses: (1) a piece of a tree and (2) a geographical area with many trees.
