Weighted Prediction (WP) has been adopted in H.264/AVC to reduce the number of generated bits when the brightness of objects in a video sequence is fluctuated. This paper presents an adaptive WP which is applied with variable block sizes. The optimal WP parameters are calculated considering characteristics of each block while parameters of the conventional schemes are optimized for a slice. In the proposed scheme, no additional bits are required to signal the optimized WP parameters since neighbor samples are used to calculate the parameters. The proposed WP is applied selectively to a block with a simple operation. In the simulation results, we observed that the proposed WP outperforms the conventional schemes.
