Sense‐and‐Avoid System Based on Radar and Cooperative Sensors

UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) are now widely used in the military field as well as for security purposes or even increasingly for a number of civilian applications. Therefore, in the future, they will be introduced into the general air traffic. That can be done if UAS are equipped with “sense‐and‐avoid” systems. An interesting solution is to use a combination of a cooperative sensor such as ADS‐B and a noncooperative “all weather” sensor, namely, radar. The capabilities of radar can be further improved for safety reasons, thanks to the data fusion methods and the other data provided by other noncooperative sensors such as electro‐optical sensors.
