Target Detection and Mission Planning Based on Pigeon‐Inspired Optimization

Haibin Duan · Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering · 2015

As with manned aircraft flights, mission planning is a critical element in successful mission performance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In the simplest case, a vehicle is supposed to fly over a disaster area such as wood fire or a large traffic accident and deliver high‐quality sensor data such as images or videos. This chapter deals with target detection, path planning, and mission assignment for UAVs using a newly proposed optimization method named pigeon‐inspired optimization (PIO). In Section 2, the biological behaviors of pigeons are introduced and the principle of basic PIO is described in detail. The hybrid model of edge potential function (EPF) and simulated annealing pigeon‐inspired optimization algorithm (SAPIO) is proposed to accomplish the target detection task for UAVs at low altitude in Section 3. We deal with 2D and 3D path planning problem to search out an optimal or a near‐optimal flight path between an initial location and the desired destination in Section 4. In Section 5, PIO is applied to mission assignment problem for multiple UAVs. Our concluding remarks are provided in Section 6.
