Soil studies in South Westland, 1984/1985

The report describes soil survey traverses which have been made across a selection of landforms representative of the coastal lowlands and hill country of South Westland. The soils observed on each traverse are identified according to the NZ Genetic Classification. Recent soils, yellow-brown sands, yellow-brown earths, podzols, gley podzols, gley soils and organic soils are described. In addition, each traverse is subdivided according to differences in the distribution of soils along it. Major trends in soil development follow those in northern Westland. Many of the soils have significant limitations to land use. Land management practices ought not to be transferred from northern Westland without consideration of the effects of the very high rainfalls in South Westland.
