Computer Aided Testing of Electrical Machines

O Gol, GE Ojeah, S Blandford · 1994

This paper describes a fully automated test system under computer control. The system consists of a 30kW dc machine for dynamic loading, a four quadrant dc drive, a controlled supply, an in-shaft torque transducer, an analogue tachometer, signal conditioning modules and a computer fitted with a data acquisition board. The test facility is capable of measuring the performance of electrical machines under both steady state and dynamic conditions. This enables machines to be tested to standard requirements for performance verification whilst extending measurement capabilities into the examination of transient operating regimes. The use of a visual programming approach renders the test facility versatile and user-friendly. The computer aided method eliminates the need for use of conventional measurement instruments. Time taken for standard tests is dramatically reduced. At the same time, the measurement accuracy is considerably increased. In addition, the fastness of the test procedure averts probable damage to the test machine due to heating, especially under strenuous test conditions.
