The Role of Mobile Instrumentation in RAFAEL'S Test Range

Simha Weissman · 1994

RAFAEL (Israel's Armament Development Authority) has established its Weapon Test and Evaluation Center (WTEC) to provide an environment for the testing of tactical weapon systems under realistic operational conditions. The test range has grown along with the weaponry development in Israel. This modern, land-based, test range comprises fixed instrumented stations, as well as mobile tracking and measuring instruments, which enable the customizing of the layout to the specific needs of each test. Moreover, the mobile instrumentation systems may be deployed at any site and operate as an independent self-contained test range, in conjunction with a mobile control center. The selection of the optimal geometry per mission is accomplished by computer simulations. As a by-product of the simulation, an a-priori accuracy map of the planned trajectory and other requested parameters is obtained. The instrumentation mobility is a valuable asset, contributing significantly to the versatility and accuracy of the test range. Future expansion should rely upon mobile instruments.
