Systematic examination of the event data is one of the key elements in feedback of the operating experience in nuclear power plants (NPP). In particular, the examination should identify adverse trends and recurring problems so the severity of potential future events can be limited. To do this, KINS is developing a system to code the event sequence in a computer-searchable format with use of a standardized code list, the Event Sequence COding and ReTrieval System (ESCORTS). The current KINS database for operating experience remains in original copy of Licensee Event Report (LER) or KINS investigation report, written as a descriptive text, costs the analyst much effort and time to examine the useful event data. Moreover, catching adverse trends is not easy and important recurring problems can be overlooked. Experiences from other organizations showed that event sequence coding is useful to cope with difficulty in analysing operating experience, to be confronted as the number of operating NPP in Korea increases. This paper presents major features of the ESCORTS under development, and illustrates the application to recent Korean NPP event data.
