Grid-based Clustering with Predefined Path Mobility for Mobile Sink Data Collection to Extend Network Lifetime in Wireless Sensor Networks

AbstractIn a typical wireless sensor network scenario, all the data are routed back to a static sink. Sensor nodes near the static sink have to forward all the data from sensor nodes that are away from the sink and thus carry a heavier traffic load leading to energy hole problem and shorter network lifetime. Hence, to overcome this limitation, a novel method is employed wherein centralized cluster configuration by mobile sink is used for Grid-based clustering (GBC) along with dual cluster heads (CHs) (a combination of primary and secondary CHs) to achieve enhanced energy balance in the network, thereby extending network lifetime. It is seen that this scheme works well for uniform as well as non-uniform node distribution. The importance of this work is the ease of formation of the clusters of equal size and selection of CHs. The simulation results show that the GBC using mobile sink outperform other clustering schemes in terms of network lifetime and energy dissipation.
