Jennings' statement that there is no difficulty concerning uniqueness of solution when the displacement method is used "because it is physically possible to force the structure into any deflected form and the force system required to do this will be unique" applies only to conservative systems under a constant temperature environment.Howe and Richardson's solution of the frame, using a procedure based on the assumption of a bilinear stress-strain curve as described by Argyris,20 was in good agreement with the writers' solution.It may be noted, however, that moment rotation relationships, in general, are dependent on the type of connection, the cross section of the member, and the axial and shear force at the connection, as well as the shape of the material stress-strain curve.
