Prospects for the Optimal Level of Nuclear Power from the Perspective of Future Electricity Demand in Korea

Mk Lee, Moon Kh, SS Kim, CY Lim · Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference 2006 · 2006

The long-term electricity demand forecast has a great influence on the nuclear power development plan, because nuclear power needs a long lead time in the construction. Evaluation made in the study shows the current national electricity demand forecast is underestimated. Therefore, underestimation of the long-term electricity demand forecast forces the nuclear power with long lead time to be excluded in the market of energy supply. When we considered the probable demand for future electricity demand estimated in this study, the number of nuclear power unit to be added in the electric system until 2017 is estimated to be in the range from 4 to 8 more units than suggested in the current national electricity plan.
