The explosion in integrated low-cost desktop computer systems for single-user dedicated applications has a companion trend: a growing interest in high-performance multitasking multiuser systems and in system architecture which lend themselves easily to peripheral- and procesing-power expansion. The mature S-100 (IEEE-696) bus, once the domain of hobby computers, offers a variety of advantages to serve such applications; thus, systems designed around this bus are enjoying a revival. Microcomputers, from a number of manufacturers, which follow this trend are described.
