Image Encryption Scheme for Print and Scan Channel

Classic image encryption techniques secure images permuting pixel locations based on a secret key. As a result the encrypted image does not reveal any information about its content and it is protected from any unauthorized access. In some applications encrypted image may be transferred to valuable documents such as passports, ID cards, certificates, and diplomas where authenticity and integrity of the document should be guaranteed with reliable mechanisms. In this paper, we address the problem of storing encrypted images in printed form and propose an image encryption technique that survives over noisy print-scan channel. The basis of the proposed method is to permute image pixels according to a secret key and an initialization vector and print them out with synchronization reference points. With synchronization reference points, image decryption after print and scan process becomes possible even if the encrypted field is severely damaged. Some of the highlights of the proposed encryption scheme are: robustness to scratches and external damages, copy/counterfeit detection feature, and smaller print area compared to Datamatrix 2D barcodes.
