Special feature. Programmable logic devices as an aid to system design
M.P.A. Taylor · Computing & Control Engineering Journal · 1992
There are many advantages to using programmable logic devices (PLDs) as a prototype in system design. This article explores the effectiveness of their use for this application and describes a suitable design process for both PLD and application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) implementation. The article is illustrated by an example of a prototype of a system, which was implemented using Actel PLDs. This shows the effectiveness of using PLDs as a prototype in system design and of the design process itself. Future extensions to the design process are explored and the choice of Actel PLDs for this purpose is reviewed.
