Service providers and enterprises used to build and support separate networks to carry their voice, video and mission-critical traffic. There is a growing trend to converge all these networks into a single, packet-based Internet Protocol (IP) network. The Internet and Corporate Intranet have grown exponentially during the last few years and applications other than traditional data, such as Voice-over-IP and video-conferencing, are becoming prevalent. Today, the Internet offers only best-effort service. However, this service does not provide IP packet delivery guarantees.
