On the importance of and prospects for harvesting new ideas from the general population

In spite of progress in open innovation and crowdsourcing, our system of innovation remains largely closed to ideas that come to average citizens in their daily lives. There are many indicators that the general population is a rich source of new ideas and is willing to share them online for the benefit of firms and entrepreneurs who may be able to implement them.
