In the academic year 1995/96 the content of the introductory programming course at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana was restructured in a fundamental way. The new content combines two programming paradigms: the procedural paradigm, and the object-oriented paradigm. Oberon was chosen as a teaching language because it makes possible the introduction of object-oriented concepts simply as extensions of well-known concepts of procedural programming. In this paper we describe the experience gained from teaching the course for the first time in 1995/96. The students were surveyed by a questionnaire at the end of the course, and the results are presented describing their evaluation of the modified course content, the choice of the teaching language, and the approach to object-oriented programming.
