Original compositions and arrangements using Latin American genres and rhythms.

Rumi Patterson · California State University ScholarWorks (system-wide DSpace) · 2013

All songs recorded for this project are based on Latin American genres and rhythms. The musical selections are comprised of five of my original compositions along with five cover songs arranged by me. The arrangements employ Afro-Latin rhythmic styles, including milonga from Argentina, festejo from Peru, xote, coco, choro, forro, bossa nova, frevo, and maracatu from Brazil, and others. Most of the selections feature Brazilian styles. The instrumentation used in this project varies from duo to sextet according to each song's style of music, specific rhythms, and arrangement choices. Several traditional Afro-Latin instruments are played, including the pifano, the cajita, the cajon, the tamborim, the zabumba from Brazil, and others.
