Perfect timing: Switzerland gears up for change

K Borras · Traffic Technology International · 2006

Progress with the implementation of intelligent transport systems in Switzerland is described. In 2008, the Federal Roads Authority (FEDRO) will assume control of the national roads network and management of traffic on the roads. These are currently the responsibility of the 23 Cantons, which use different systems. Switzerland has a national ITS architecture and a multi-faceted project called Traffic Management Switzerland (TMS). The formation of ITS Switzerland and the role played by LAVOC (Laboratoire de Voie et Circulation) at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne are described. The author describes his meeting with Andre-Gilles Dumont, head of LAVOC, and LAVOC's head of ITS research, Edward Chung and his predecessor Alex Torday. Their views on ITS Switzerland and the 2008 ITS Europe Congress to be hosted in Switzerland are given.
