Generating sampling locations for SST CCI
Ralf Quast, Boettcher Martin · Figshare · 2014
This animation illustrates how sampling locations are generated from a Sobol sequence. Basically, the sampling points are evenly distributed in time and over the water surface of the Earth, with the constraint that for a priori clear-sky areas the density of points is correspondingly reduced. Note that, by purpose, the sampling in equirectangular coordinates yields a spatial overdensity of sampling points near the poles. All sampling points are candidates for finding clear-sky reference locations for match-ups between observations acquired by different satellites, and thus facilitate inter-sensor calibration and inter-algorithm comparisons.
