The efficiency of frequency response analysis for evaluating the dynamic performance of manufacturing ordering and control strategies

J.S. Ferris, DENIS R. TOWILL · 1992

Considers frequency response analysis on models of fundamental manufacturing ordering and control strategies. By considering periodic inputs, this form of analysis is based on the system's response to the most prevalent form of industrial input patterns. The simplicity of the mathematics involved in calculating the response characteristics from the system models is key to the attraction of the method. Primarily this is because it offers a practical avenue into theoretical understanding. In addition, the frequency responses' summary of criteria generated by various input responses makes it suitable for initial analysis or vetting of dynamic behaviour. In this respect, it opens up the potential for more widespread consideration of dynamic behaviour at the system design stage. Finally, different frequency bands relate to a wide range of operational situations and the terminology of frequency response analysis can be directly related as 'profiles' to strategic industrial considerations.
