Servicing Microprocessor Systems

J Kneen · 1979

Microprocessors introduce service problems traditional tools cannot solve. Software diagnostics can exercise the CPU, ROM RAM and some input-output and verify correct operation. Away from the CPU software becomes less effective and external instrumentation must be used. Signature analysers compress long strings of data into unique signature of four hex characters. With adequate forethought throughout the design signature analysis can solve problems to the component level. Logic analysers trace many channels of related data simultaneously and with sophisticated triggering capability can window into microprocessor problem areas. Driving the test instrumentation, and the microprocessor, on a standard bus allows increased throughput and quality of tests.
