Since the H.264/AVC video coding standard uses variable block size coding, multiple reference frame, ratedistortion optimization, and etc., it provides high coding performance compared with previous standards such as MPEG-2 and H.263. However, these tools dramatically increase the complexity of motion estimation in the encoder. In multiple reference frame motion estimation, the computational burden is proportional to the number of searched reference frames. In this paper, we propose the method that adaptively controls both the number of reference frames and the search range of the multiple reference frame motion estimation. Experimental results show that the proposed method considerably saves motion estimation time with negligible PSNR decrease and bit-rate increase on H.264/AVC reference software.
