Upscaling of Well-log Data to Seismic Scale – Comparison of Backus Theory and Running Average Method Results

A. Kozubal, Kamila Wawrzyniak-Guz · Proceedings · 2015

Summary Well-logs measures with higher resolution than seismic data, that is why in order to use it in seismic research, special procedure called upscalling is needed. In general, the goal of upscalling is to predict elastic properties at lower frequencies (seismic) from the properties at higher frequencies (sonic logs). It leads to smoothening of well-logs, without changing the amount of depth points, by removing local changes of elastic properties. In this paper, two methods of upscalling were compared: the Backus averaging and simple averaging. Calculations and analysis were performed using an original application, created in Matlab environment especially for this purpose.
