A new algorithm is developed in this paper for autom atic generation of a two-dimensional quadrilateral mesh . It is based on the looping method which defines the boundary of a two-dimensional domain with continuous curves and therefore, enables the boundary to be offset inward while producing quadrilateral elements. A cutting line is used to prevent penetration of elements. It decomposes a domain into two sub-domains if there is a possibility that elements to be generated may be penetrated each other. The minimum distance between two boundary nodes is used to determine the possibility. The offsetting and the prevention processes are repeated until the domain is filled with four- or six-node sub-domains. Six node domains are divided into quadrilateral elements with application of pre-defined splitters. The new algorithm is applied to automatic generation of a quadrilateral mesh for arbitrary two-dimensional domains and then, evaluated with the internal angles of an element.
