The Significance of Modeling and Visualization
John A. Sokolowski, Hector M. Garcia · 2016
This chapter addresses a significant component of the digital patient, namely visualization. It shows how 3D graphics are helping pave the way for engaging visualizations. There are many modes of visualization available for representing human physiology. The chapter discusses two diverse, but effective modes that are supportive to developing the digital patient and each mode's ability to replicate the human anatomy for education and testing. These are classified as visualization as an explanation tool and visualization as an exploratory tool. The visualization data is connected to the simulation system describing its function, and it contains all of the necessary samples providing enough detail for meaningful simulations. In this research mode, visualization is the final step of the simulation, and it is used to validate, verify, or gain insight into the model and its results. The difficulty in modeling of a digital patient arises due to physiological uncertainty or behavioral unpredictability.
