Distributing your Software
Bram van Oosterhout · Australian Software Engineering Conference · 1991
The continuing reduction in the price of processing power makes the distribution of processing more and more attractive to large organisations. The need to contain operational costs implies that the applications operate largely unattended. This paper proposes a seven phase cycle for the life of a distributed application: Acceptance, Distribution, Installation, Initialisation, Operation, Recovery and Archival. It discusses the major characteristics of each phase and presents suggestions for implementation. The experience presented here will prove valuable for anyone considering to develop software in-house and distribute it over hundreds of nodes in a Wide Area Network.
